OVERVIEW

GeoQuest is a location-based entertainment (LBE) XR platform that transforms real-world locations into open-world, interactive experiences. By combining geospatial data, AI-driven content generation, and spatial interaction, GeoQuest enables users to explore cities through missions such as mini-games, local stories, photo challenges, and digital collectibles.

MISSION TYPE

Voxel-style white foxes on a snowy terrain in a digital room. Scoreboard shows 26744 points. Text reads "Snowy Mountain in Voxel style."

Mini-Game

Use "Generative World" to fill environments based on context. Different game templates are spawned according to the specific characteristics of each location, enabling a variety of interactions such as shooting, searching, cleaning, and puzzle-based gameplay.

A cartoon shrimp-shaped playground ride on orange leaves. Text reads "上野公園" and "エビフライ." A message says "Collected!" with "OK" button.

Collectable

Use VPS location images to generate unique collectible rewards. This enables infinite card collections. Themes can be adjusted for different use cases, too.

In a park, a pop-up shows a statue with two figures on a pedestal. Text reads, "Success! You found the spot!" Green trees in the background.

Photo Spot

Users complete quests by arriving on site and taking a photo. AI vision verifies whether the target object has been successfully captured, transforming ordinary sightseeing into playful, location-based experiences.

Large red lantern with Japanese characters, retro scene overlap, people in traditional attire, temple entrance, vibrant and historical fusion.

Memory Trace

Geo-pinned historical photos and videos are anchored to specific locations, allowing users to view past moments directly within the context of the present-day environment.

Black and white landscape photo on grass, features river, trees, and sunlight beams. Text with Japanese characters below and around the photo.

Local Story

A virtual creature narrates local stories using real-world information retrieved via web search. Each story is accompanied by a realistic historical photo and a character monologue, while players can also access a factual summary for reference. Folklore and local narratives are gathered and generated to blend authentic history with immersive storytelling.

Man in white shirt holding wooden block with Japanese text. Neutral expression. Indoors with light-colored wall. Social media app overlay.

Fortune Telling

Location-specific predictions are generated by AI, influenced by factors such as luck level, geographic context, and current weather conditions.

BACKSTORY

Q1: What potential do we see in GeoQuest?

A1:

  • GeoQuest was born from a simple observation: cities are full of stories, but most of them are invisible. Maps tell us where to go, but rarely explain why a place matters. GeoQuest explores the potential of turning real-world locations into an open-world layer, where exploration, learning, and play coexist.

Q2: What are the advantages of using GeoQuest for AR exploration?

A2:

  • Location becomes the interface: GeoQuest treats physical space as the core UI. Streets, landmarks, and hidden corners trigger experiences naturally.

  • AI-driven, context-aware content: Stories, missions, and interactions adapt based on location, user behavior, and environmental factors—creating personal experiences.

  • Multi-layered engagement: From mini-games and photo challenges to historical narratives and collectibles, GeoQuest supports different depths of engagement for different audiences—tourists, locals, families, or explorers.

Q3: What future scenarios could GeoQuest enable?

A3:

  • Next-generation tourism: Self-guided, AI-powered city exploration that adapts to visitor interests, language, pace, and time.

  • Cultural preservation through interaction: Local history and folklore resurfacing through spatial storytelling rather than static plaques.

  • Education beyond classrooms: Cities becoming outdoor learning environments where history, science, and culture are discovered through exploration.

  • Playable cities: Where everyday spaces double as game worlds—blending entertainment, learning, and civic engagement.
